* This is a transfer marking punch. It is spring loaded in the up position. The bottom or working surface of the punch is tapered. This taper allows the marking tool to be centered into a hole in the top of two mating materials. When the head is hit with a hammer the spring loaded tip moves down into the hole and marks the second of the two mating materials. Hence the second or lower material is marked for drilling.
* The marking tool is marked J.R. Rand and PAT June 17, 1890.
* The tool is 4 1/2 inches long uncompressed.
* The marking shaft will extend about 1 inch into the top hole.
* The tool is in really good shape and functions as if new. It has been in storage for at least 40 years.
* The original case is made from wood. The label is about 90% intact.
* The case label says "RAND'S CENTER MARKING TOOL", "Patented June 17, 1890", "MONTGOMERY & CO SALE AGENT", "NEW YORK" and "J.R. Rand patentee and manufacturer". The address for Montgomery and company is not readable. The label also has a picture of the marking tool.
* This is a very unique tool in that I can find no internet reference or others like it for sale.
* The case is really cool. It must have been an expensive tool in it's day.
* My best guess the tool was manufactured between 1890 and 1910.
