This is the latest book on how to make Babbitt bearings using some new materials not available when yer Grandpa used to make 'em. Babbitt putty!? Did you know about this stuff? You use it to plug up all the places where the Babbitt might leak out when you pour. "Babbitt tinning" to make sure the Babbitt Sticks where it's supposed to . . . and more! This is Vincent's latest book and it's a Great one!
Here's Vincent to tell you about pouring Babbitt bearings . . .
"Babbitt metal is a soft, white, anti-friction alloy, the formula of which was developed in 1839 by Issac Babbitt. His original formula consisted mainly of tin, copper and antimony. But since then, others have experimented with the original formula by adding lead as well as other elements. As a result of this experimentation, quite a variety of white, silvery alloys with varying characteristics have been developed. This group of alloys known as the "White Metals" have been used for everything from machine bearings, packings and linings, to toys, ornaments and fusible metals.
"Since Babbitt metal bearings were widely used in machinery built prior to 1940, I thought information on the subject might be of interest to those considering rebuilding some of these old machines.
"Even though they seem to be getting harder to find, there are still quite a few such machines around and it is possible to pick them up at bargain prices. Since they were so well built, often all that is required to put them back in working order is cleaning, painting and re-pouring the Babbitt bearings.
"As you will soon discover, rebabbitting an old bearing is a simple task. In the process, the existing bearing shell and shaft or a mandrel form the mold. The old Babbitt is chipped or melted away. Then simple fixtures are devised to align and secure the shaft and shell in the positions they will occupy in the finished bearing. An open space is left between the shell and shaft that is later filled with molten Babbitt to form the bearing. Open ends and holes are sealed with Babbitt putty to close the mold. Then the shell is preheated, and molten Babbitt is poured into the open space between the shaft and the shell mentioned earlier. When cool, the shaft is removed to expose a brand new shiny bearing surface. When precision is desired, new bearing surfaces are scraped, bored or reamed. Near perfect fits are possible."
