Solderless Protoboard / Breadboard 830 Hole / Tie
This is another tool that I'm not particularly fond of but we have started carrying due to popular demand. My main problem with these protoboards is the number of people I see trying to do things they were never intended for. If I add up the time I've spent chasing and troubleshooting loose wires, mis-placed wires, crosstalk, shorting components, etc I could have laid out a PCB and had it made and chased real problems instead.
We have three boards in out lineup. This one is the smallest with 830 tie points and mounted on an aluminum base with three terminal posts. This makes for a much more stable layout than loose, unmounted boards with dangling leads tied straight to a power source just waiting to pull out of the board and/or short.
If you are going to use these, bear a few things in mind
2. The stray capacitance between tie-point rows, stary inductance in long leaded components and general high-crosstalk environment of a protoboard circuit make it unsuitable for anything over a few MHz. Please please please don't try to build RF circuits or high gain circuits on these and expect them to work right. (Oscillators won't and amplifiers will)
3. Keep component leads short and/or components close to the board. Worry less about salvaging that 1 cent resistor later than making the layout clean and neat like a PCB. No forests of components
4. Bring out wires from test points instead of clipping onto component leads. Clipping onto component leads invariably pulls them out of the board or pulls them into another component causing a short
