Atlas manual lathe operation, thread & machinist tables

The manual is written around the 12 inch diameter swing Atlas back geared metal lathe. This also covers the six inch, ten inch, and twelve inch models of this lathe that were produced under both the Atlas and Sears "Craftsman" brand names. This basic design is the same for virtually all manual lathes made up to the present. Newer lathes will have much more complex gearing, but easier to setup, and may be more robust in their construction but the basic operation doesn't change appreciably until you enter CNC lathe operation. Even then knowledge of the basic layout, tool selection, drive speeds, tool feed rates, material setup and support, etc. all are necessary to the safe and productive use of any lathe.
The main chapter headings of the table of contents of the manual are listed below:
This manual includes the supplement on thread cutting. A partial copy of the thread chart is shown below. There is in depth discussion on threading techniques for right and left hand threads and metric threads. Also the basics of acme and other specialty threads are covered.
NOTE: You will receive a professional copy in PDF format including version 7.0 of the Adobe Acrobat Reader Program. The Acrobat Reader program allows you to enlarge or reduce the image as necessary without loosing any visual clarity. It also gives you the ability to print all or part of a page or a chapter as needed. You take only the data you need out to your shop so you don't risk ruining the original while performing a task. Plus you can add setup notes peculiar to your immediate project right on the page. Those notes can then become part of your permanet record for that project, allowing easy reproduction when necessary.
