Attenuators reduce the full range of RF signals by a set amount. In "tuning" video distribution systems, it is often easier to over amplify the signals, then reduce them where desired.
This in-line attenuators can be inserted in coaxial cable feeds to reduce signal amplitude levels. Combinations of attenuators may be used together to create greater insertion losses. For example, if a cable feed was found to have a signal level of 25 dBmV, and a level of only 5 dBmV is desired, then one 20dB could be used create a 20 dB insertion loss, thereby reducing the signal level from 25 dBmV down to 5 dBmV.
An attenuator is a passive microwave component which, when inserted in the signal path of a system, reduces the signal by a specified amount. They normally possess a low VSWR which makes them ideal for reducing load VSWR in order to reduce measurement uncertainties. They are sometimes used simply to absorb power, either to reduce it to a measurable level, or in the case of receivers to establish an exact level to prevent overload of following stages.
